Dave Hakkens erfindet das Baukasten-Smartphone

Dave Hakkens hat das Smartphone neu gedacht. Auf einer Basisplattform ermöglichen austauschbare Module – sogenannte Bloks – wie Kamera, Bildschirm oder Speicher Individualität und Nachhaltigkeit.

Die Idee vom modularen Smartphone wurde über Nacht ein Youtube-Hit und inspiriert seitdem die Designer der größten Elektronikkonzerne weltweit. Auf einer Entwicklerkonferenz im kalifornischen Mountain View wurde kürzlich ein erstes Basismodell der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert: ein Blick auf das erste Baukasten-Smartphone der Zukunft.

„Ich sah viel Müll um mich herum und dachte, ich habe vielleicht eine Lösung dafür“, sagt der niederländische Designer Dave Hakkens. Sein Konzept basiert auf einer denkbar einfachen Logik, in der Elemente wie Kamera, Bildschirm, Speicher und Prozessor individuelle, austauschbare Module – sogenannte Bloks – sind, die auf eine Basisplattform gesteckt werden. Statt alle paar Jahre das Handy wegzuwerfen, weil die technischen Möglichkeiten sich selbst überholt haben, plädiert Hakkens für einen selbstständigen, einfachen Austausch einzelner Teile.

Heute landen die meisten Handys innerhalb von zwei Jahren auf dem Schrotthaufen. Zumeist, weil eine Reparatur nicht möglich oder teurer wäre als ein neues Gerät. Nach Angaben der UNO-Initiative „Solving the E-Waste Problem“ sammelte die Welt allein im Jahr 2012 knapp 49 Millionen Tonnen Elektroschrott an. An der Spitze der Verursacher stehen die USA und Kanada, knapp dahinter die EU, gefolgt von China. Die jährliche Menge soll bis 2017 sogar um ein weiteres Drittel steigen.

Das ist das ursprüngliche Design von Dave Hakkens, mit dem er 2013 Millionen von User von seinem Konzept überzeugte. Die einzelnen Teile des modularen Smartphones sind so angelegt, dass sie ineinander fassen – und damit auswechselbar sind, was den Elektromüllberg reduziert.

So ähnlich könnte das modulare Smartphone aussehen. Mitte April 2014 präsentierte Google das Project Ara als Kooperation zwischen Google und Phonebloks auf der Entwicklerkonferenz in Mountain View. Der nächste Schritt: Das Phone wirklich bauen, inklusive Sennheiser Blok.

Klangqualität verbessern

Mit dem Lego-ähnlichen Smartphone würde zumindest einem Teil des Elektroschrotts weltweit der Kampf angesagt. Wobei die Idee gleich mehrere Trends in sich vereint: Neben Nachhaltigkeit steht vor allem die Individualität der kombinierbaren Bloks hoch im Kurs, die nach dem beliebten DIY-Prinzip wie Puzzleteile selbstständig zu Hause zusammengesteckt werden – und zuvor in einer dazugehörigen App virtuell, um die Auswahl zu erleichtern. Wenn ein Teil im Handy kaputtgeht, tauscht man es einfach aus. Wenn man bessere Fotos will, wechselt man den Kamera-Blok. Wenn man besseren Sound möchte, nimmt man zum Beispiel den Sennheiser-Blok. Sogar die Einzelteile soll man sich im 3D-Drucker bald selbst ausdrucken können.

Alles nur Zukunftsmusik? Mit dem Slogan „A Phone Worth Keeping“ – ein Handy, das man aufbehalten sollte – ging Phonebloks Ende 2013 als Initiative von Hakkens an den Start. Eine massive Welle an sozialen Medienstimmen unterstützte das Konzept – mit heute mehr als 20 Millionen Youtube-Klicks für das erste Video. Einige Monate später kamen etwa Google und Sennheiser als Partner offiziell dazu.

Der nächste Schritt: einen Prototyp bauen. Mitte April 2014 präsentierte Google das Project Ara als Kooperation zwischen Google und Phonebloks auf der Entwicklerkonferenz in Mountain View. Hier nahm bereits das Basismodell reale, wenn auch noch auf Kabel angewiesene Gestalt an: ein Aluminiumrahmen mit Bildschirm, Prozessor und WLAN-Einheit. Farbe, Design, Bloks – frei wählbar in Zukunft über Dritthersteller wie Sennheiser. So kann die Blok-Revolution im Handumdrehen zur Soundrevolution werden. „Jetzt müssen wir die verschiedenen Firmen zusammenbringen, und das Handy wirklich bauen“, sagt Hakkens. Eine erste Version des modularen Smartphones soll bereits im Januar 2015 erhältlich sein.

Dave Hakkens has reinvented the smartphone. On a basic platform, exchangeable modules known as bloks – like camera, screen or memory – offer hitherto unheard-of individuality and sustainability.

The idea of the modular smartphone became a Youtube hit overnight. Since then it has been inspiring the designers of the world’s biggest electronics companies. A first basic model has just been presented to the public at a developers’ conference in Mountain View, California – a glimpse of the first modular smartphone of the future.

“I saw a whole load of litter lying around, and thought, maybe I could solve the problem,” says Dutch designer Dave Hakkens. His idea is based on the simplest imaginable logic: elements like the camera, screen, memory and processor all become individual and exchangeable modules, called bloks, slotted into a basic platform. No longer will you have to jettison your mobile every few years because technology has moved on. Hakkens’ idea makes it possible just to replace the individual components one at a time.

Today most mobile phones end up on the scrap heap before two years are out. Mostly because they can’t be repaired, or the repair would cost more than a new piece of equipment. According to figures supplied by the UNO initiative “Solving the E-Waste Problem”, just in the year 2012 the world collected 49 million tons of electronic scrap. Top of the league in this respect are the USA and Canada, with the EU not far behind, followed by China. It is thought that by 2017 the annual quantity could rise by as much as a third.

New sound quality for old

With the new Lego style smartphone, war has been declared worldwide on electronic scrap – or at least a part of it. The idea is made up of several strands at once. Sustainability for one, but individuality is also a priority – with combinable bloks that can be assembled independently at home on a DIY basis, like the pieces of a jigsaw. To make your selection easier, they come preassembled in a virtual app. When a part of your mobile goes, now you can just replace it. If you want to take better photos, you change the camera blok. If you want better sound, you could opt for the Sennheiser blok. It should even be possible soon to print out the individual components yourself on a 3D printer.

Sounds like a pipe dream? Hakkens launched his Phonebloks initiative at the end of 2013, under the slogan “A Phone Worth Keeping”. A massive chorus of voices in the social media supported the idea – today there have been more than 20 million YouTube clicks for the first video. Just a few months later, Google and Sennheiser joined the project as official partners.

The next step was to build a prototype. In mid-April 2014 Google presented Project Ara as a cooperative venture between Google and Phonebloks at a developers’ conference in Mountain View, California. Here the basic model was already acquiring a shape, though still dependent on cable – an aluminum frame with a screen, processor and WLAN unit. As for the color, the design and the bloks – you can pick your own in future, from third party suppliers like Sennheiser. So in the blink of an eye the blok revolution segues into a sound revolution. “Now we just need to get the different companies together in order to actually build the phone,” says Hakkens. A first version of the modular smartphone should be obtainable by January 2015.

From Printing Jewelry to Robot Parts

Spit out of the open mouth of the Makerbot, a complete bracelet lands on the floor. It doesn't lie there for long until it is collected by one of the audience. Three-dimensional printing is ready to conquer the masses. Toys? Cars? Even food? It's all imaginable.

"My six-year-old daughter prints out her own shoes," stated Pablos Holman of Intellectual Ventures Lab, where he is part of a wide variety of futuristic invention projects. "I'm sure in no time we'll be printing out smoothies, strawberries and other foods." Most beautiful to him is that we can all realize our own projects with those machines, from jewelry to robot parts.

"We've heard about parts of micro satellites that have been printed and sent to outer space," said Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO of Shapeways. His company makes it possible to create one single product for the same price as thousands of them. Any material or product is possible as the technology is evolving fast. For now, Shapeways allows users to choose from 25 different materials, including metals, ceramics and glass, in order to give shape to an individual’s product.

In the industrial sector where Ingo Ederer works as CEO of Voxeljet, 3D printing cannot be missed anymore. More money is involved here, and bigger printers. The consumers might not have realized it yet, but the method is there to stay - and evolve.

You will know when 3D printing has reached mainstream, Weijmarshausen argued: "when it's not about the technology anymore but when we just like what it provides!" The most alluring characteristic, he said, is that it's environmentally friendly as there is no shipping involved.

I'd like to see children getting taught in school how the technology works, added Erik de Bruijn, Co-Founder and Designer at Ultimaker. He was also the one standing for many hours in the conference hallways and enthusiastically explaining anyone interested of what this great new thing is all about, how "it will improve people's lives." In his view, 3D printing will enter the masses within the next five years.
